Transfer WhatsApp Chat Messages to Telegram

The WhatsApp privacy scandal at the beginning of the year 2021 has created a fuss among loyal users. WhatsApp, with billions of its users around the world, is trying to share the users’ data with third parties. It is a nightmare for WhatsApp users because, in the data war era like today, privacy security is the main thing to protect.

The effect of this scandal was predictable, other instant messaging applications gained millions of new users and popularity. Telegram is an instant messaging app that always gained new users whenever privacy issues hit WhatsApp. 

Telegram, which was founded by a young Russian entrepreneur, Pavel Durov, is not a newcomer to the world of instant messaging applications. Telegram has long been around and has its own user base.

In Indonesia, Telegram was once blocked by the government as a result of its own strong commitment to protect the users’ privacy. Telegram refuses to open its data to anyone including the government. The Indonesian government then blocked Telegram with the fear that it is being used by terrorists.

However, if you’ve been a long-time user of WhatsApp but now trying to move on to Telegram. Moving on may be hard because you don’t want to lose the history chat in WhatsApp. Moreover, if the chat you find hard to lose contains important information.

But don’t worry, you can now transfer your history chat from WhatsApp to Telegram easily. To do that, follow these steps:

(1) Android users

Open the WhatsApp chat you want to transfer:

  1. Tap the vertical three dots at the top right corner
  2. Tap ‘More’
  3. Tap ‘Export Chat’
  4. Tap ‘Without Media’ if you want to move the chat without the images, voice notes, etc
  5. Tap ‘Include Media’ if you want to move the chat with the images, voice notes, etc
  6. Pick Telegram app 
  7. Tap the chat destination


(2) iOS users

  1. Open contact info or group info from WhatsApp
  2. Tap ‘Export Chat’ and choose Telegram from the share menu
  3. You can also swipe left from the chat, then tap the menu and Export Chat
