Online shopping is one of the solutions to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus. Shopping online does not require people to go out when buying daily home necessities or shops for groceries. Therefore, online shopping is expected to reduce the intensities of people gathered that are at risk of spreading the coronavirus.
However, as more people are switching from shopping offline to shopping online, more security issues concerned. Hacking is reported to increase during the COVID19 pandemic. Thus, shopping online is constrained by cybersecurity issues that need to be addressed carefully.
The fight against cyberattacks is not the state’s fight, the people as internet users must also play an active role in fighting cyberattacks. Especially for online shoppers, there are tips to safely shop online and prevent cyberattacks. Please check the detail below:
Regularly change password is highly advisable for internet users. Website owners may have done their best to address cybersecurity, however, it is not enough. Internet users must protect their accounts by any means that necessary.
Change passwords every six months can help you to prevent cyberattacks. Besides that, make sure to create a strong password by using the combination of uppercase and lowercase, symbols and characters, 8 syllables at minimum, and try to not use the combination that is easy to guess.
And then, avoid using the same password for all of the accounts (ECs accounts and social media accounts). List your password in a note or use the password manager app. To add security layers, activate the two-factor authentication step.
Using public wifi may save the data plan, however, we don’t recommend the use of public wifi when making an online payment. The reason is, there is the possibility of data leaks if using public wifi.
It may happen, as we don’t know who is the administrator behind the public wifi. So, it is best to use a private connection or mobile data connection when making online payments.
Installing antivirus other than the one from the OS may also help to increase security. The additional antivirus can anticipate malware from online shopping activities.
Make sure to always update the antivirus.
When shopping online, it is advised to use personal devices such as smartphones and laptops. Using public devices and/or a friend’s devices is at risk of personal data being imposed.
Using other people’s devices, you cannot ensure the security of the devices. Therefore, make sure to always use personal devices when shopping online.
Even though shopping online is at risk of cybersecurity, please don’t be afraid to shop online. As we mentioned above, the Indonesian internet communities can play an active role in fighting against cybercrime by protecting accounts on possession. Cybercrime can be prevented if we pay attention to the points above.
